OUR APPROACH

Water as a language of trust

Our Approach — Held in Waters

Child-led, always

We honor your child's cues, boundaries, and readiness — no pressure, no rushing.

Somatic & body-aware

Children learn to feel at home in their bodies before they feel at home in the water.

Caregiver as anchor

For babies and toddlers, caregivers are in the water — that shared presence is where trust is built. For older children, caregivers are warmly invited to watch and be close.

Adaptive & inclusive

Trained in working with children with autism, trauma, and sensory differences — every child is welcome here.

Safety through confidence

Real water safety lives in the body — in ease, regulation, and familiarity with water.

Boundaries, not fear

We guide children to explore water with curiosity — never overwhelm, never force.

Every session is rooted in somatic practice and infant development wisdom. We don't rush milestones. We follow your child's lead — building ease in the body first, so that real safety and real skills have something lasting to grow from.

Hannah Freeman
Founder · Gentle Swim Educator · Somatic Water Guide · Doula · Bodyworker

Hannah has spent over 25 years immersed in the transformative nature of water — particularly for new mothers, babies, and families in transition. Water was her first teacher. By age 14 she was already sharing that love as a volunteer swim instructor; at 16, she founded Little Splashes in her backyard — a program that now serves over 300 families annually. Her approach weaves together somatic practice, bodywork, sound healing, and a deep reverence for the wisdom of nature.

THE SIGNATURE PIECE

What water safety really is.

Water Safety Feature — Held in Waters
A piece by Hannah Freeman

On floaties, rescue swimming, and the thing we're actually protecting.

Real water safety is a relationship. It lives in a child's body — in how their nervous system responds when water touches their face, when they are held, when they are startled. A child who has been trained to perform a safety skill is not the same as a child who is actually safe in water.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions parents ask most

FAQ — Held in Waters
Can my baby really be in the water this young? +
Yes — and the earlier, the better. Babies are born with a natural affinity for water. Our sessions are designed from newborns up, using gentle, body-aware techniques that honor each stage of development. We move slowly, follow your baby's cues, and make sure both of you feel safe and held from the very first moment.
Do I get in the water too? +
Yes. Caregivers are in the water for every class. You are your child's anchor — their sense of safety begins with you. The connection you build together in the water is not a side effect of our sessions, it is the whole point. Come ready to be in the water alongside your child.
Why no floaties? +
Floaties lift a child's body into a position their nervous system doesn't actually understand — head up, feet dangling, core disengaged. They teach the body a shape it cannot hold on its own, and they create a dependency that disappears the moment the floatie comes off. When that happens at a lake, a party, or in a moment of surprise, the child's body has no true memory of what water actually feels like. That gap is where accidents happen. In our classes, we use fins when children are developmentally ready. Fins extend rather than lift — they keep the body in the position the water is asking for, and let a small body feel their own strength moving through it.
What if my child is scared of the water? +
Fear is welcome here. We never force, rush, or push. Hannah's somatic approach is specifically designed to work with children carrying water anxiety — meeting them exactly where they are and building trust one gentle moment at a time. Many of our families come to us after a scary experience in the water. We know how to find our way back together.
Where exactly are classes held? +
Classes are held in Hood River, Oregon. Exact venue address — including parking information — is sent in your welcome email after you register through Jackrabbit. We use both a large pool and a warm therapy pool depending on the session.
How do I know when registration opens? +
Session dates, times, and enrollment windows are announced on our Instagram (@heldinwaters) and this website. The best way to never miss a spot is to join our email list — we send a heads-up before registration goes live. Spots fill quickly, so signing up early makes a real difference.
My child has special needs — is this right for us? +
Absolutely. Hannah holds adaptive aquatics certification through Swim Angel Fish and has extensive experience supporting children with autism, trauma, sensory sensitivities, and physical delays. Every child is welcome here. If you'd like to talk through your child's specific needs before joining a group class, a private consultation with Hannah is available — reach out directly at hoodriver@heldinwaters.com or (800) 820-8210.
